Six from seven is not a disaster. But the one that slipped us hurt, because it was the headline call: 2-1 Toulouse. The game finished 1-1, and the difference between right and wrong was a single Rodez equaliser in the second half.

What We Got Right

Almost everything structural landed. Toulouse led at half-time thanks to Cristian Casseres burying one in the opening minute, so the half-time home or draw call was already locked before most people had found their seats. From there, away side to score, both sides to score, goals in both halves, total over 1.5, and goals landing in the 1-4 range all hit as Marvin Touho equalised for Rodez on 52 minutes. Seven markets, six correct. On a pre-season friendly with rotation on both sides, that reads well.

That read was exact. The defensive fragility we flagged was not a generalisation. It showed up on the pitch, and Rodez took their moment.

Where the Call Came Apart

The exact score was 2-1 Toulouse. The actual score was 1-1. Toulouse did not find a second goal, and in a match where both managers were rotating and experimenting, they never quite broke the Rodez block after the equaliser.

The quality gap was real. The second Toulouse goal was not. The friendly discount we mentioned turned out to matter more than the division gap. With Yann Gboho already out injured blunting the attack, and substitutions disrupting any rhythm Toulouse had built, they could not convert pressure into a second. Rodez's 3-5-2 held its shape after the equaliser and the game petered out.

To be clear: we are not pointing at Gboho's absence as an excuse. We knew he was out before we made the call. What we underestimated was how much a pre-season fixture in a neutral venue in the USA, with both squads being run through rotations, compresses scorelines. Toulouse had chances. They did not take them.

The clean half call also needs an honest mention. We said Toulouse would keep Rodez out for at least one half. They conceded on 52 minutes, so the second half was gone. But Rodez did not score in the first half, so technically both teams kept a clean half each. We called home to keep a clean half, and the actual result was that both sides managed one. A narrow miss framed generously, but a miss nonetheless on the intent of the call.

What It Tells Us Going Forward

The signal underneath the noise remains consistent. Toulouse's defence leaks. Their attack functions but needs Gboho fit to find a higher gear. In competitive Ligue 1 football, that combination will keep mattering. Pre-season friendlies in unfamiliar settings compress results toward draws more than any model comfortably accounts for, and this one reminded us of that.

Next time Toulouse appear on our board, we will weight the friendly discount harder on the margin between a win and a draw. The structure of our read was right. The finishing line shifted one goal too far.
