We Called Lazio to Win. We Did Not Call a Demolition.

Eight from ten. On paper that reads well. In practice, the two markets we missed were both pointing at the same thing we underestimated: Lazio didn't just beat Flaminia, they put six past them without reply. Cancellieri inside three minutes, Dele-Bashiru at 31, Bordon on 41, Ratkov right after the break, Rovella at 55 and Zaccagni from the spot in stoppage time. This was not a comfortable win. It was a statement.

What We Got Right

Almost everything structural landed. Clean half, both half goals, over on total goals, Lazio to score, Flaminia not to score, home or draw at the break, the safety net. The read on Flaminia's attacking capability was honest and correct: they never threatened Furlanetto in 93 minutes. The read on Lazio's motivation was also right.

Where We Went Wrong

Two markets missed, and both collapsed for the same reason. We capped the expected goals too low.

The blowout risk is real here given how outmatched Flaminia are, but I think the rotation keeps it capped.

The rotation did not keep it capped. Gattuso ran through his squad, but each wave of fresh legs found more space, not less. Flaminia had no answer for the first eleven and no answer for the second. By the time Zaccagni stepped up in the 93rd minute, this had gone well beyond friendly-grade rotation territory.

The exact score call of 3-0 was the same error expressed more precisely. Tom's logic about Lazio's Serie A scoring rate spiking against lower opposition was correct. The spike was just bigger than we modelled. Sheila called it: Flaminia kept things tight for maybe 20 minutes. She was right. After that, the quality told and kept on telling all the way to a 6-0 final.

There is no dramatic chaos moment to point at here. No own goal, no red card, no fluke set piece that changed the game. Lazio simply had more firepower than we allowed for, and Flaminia had even less resistance than we expected. That is a forecasting miss on the ceiling, not on the direction.

What It Tells Us Going Forward

The structural calls held. When we said Lazio would not concede, they did not. When we said Flaminia would not score, they did not. Those reads are what give the brand its legs across a full season.

But this match is a useful calibration for pre-season friendlies against heavily outmatched opposition. When the class gap is this large and a full squad is auditioning in front of a demanding head coach, the ceiling on goals is higher than Serie A run-in averages suggest. We will factor that in.

Lazio go into their next pre-season fixture with a clean sheet, six goals scored and a squad that looks sharp. For Gattuso, the Bologna opener on August 24 cannot come soon enough. For us, eight from ten is a foundation. The two we missed are the lesson.
