What we missed
We Called Bulgaria. Luxembourg Had Other Ideas.
Seven of nine markets landed. But the one that mattered most, the result, went the wrong way. Here is what happened and why.

Seven from nine. On paper, a good night. In practice, Luxembourg left Plovdiv with three points and we left with a lesson.
What We Got Right
Almost everything except the scoreboard. Both sides scored, both halves produced goals, the total landed over 2.5, and Bulgaria were level or ahead at the break exactly as we expected. The away goal, the second-half goal, the multigoal band, the home goal: all landed cleanly.
Sheila
Even without the Thill brothers, Luxembourg carry a counter-attacking threat. Bulgaria's back line isn't impenetrable.
She was right, and she said it before kick off. Luxembourg's counter-attacking thread was always there. We just did not follow it all the way to its conclusion.
Where We Came Unstuck
The call was Bulgaria to win. The exact score we locked in was 2-1 to the home side. The actual score was 1-2 to Luxembourg. Same goals, different winner. That is not a small miss; that is the whole match.
We also called the clean half for Bulgaria, expecting them to keep Luxembourg out for at least one period. Instead it was Luxembourg who held firm in one half, flipping that market against us too.
The structure of our read was not wrong. Bulgaria had the better win probability, the stronger recent form, and Luxembourg were missing two of their most influential midfielders. On the numbers, Bulgaria were the right side to favour.
Tom
Going with 2-1, Bulgaria win. Low conviction on the exact score though. 1-1 is almost as likely per the numbers.
Tom flagged the uncertainty on the scoreline before we locked it. That honesty matters in hindsight. The model had 1-1 and 2-1 clustered at the top together, and in a match this tight, the difference between a Bulgaria win and a Luxembourg win came down to fine margins we could not see from the outside.
Without the event data to pinpoint what turned the game, we cannot point to a single moment. But this is the nature of a match sitting inside a narrow probability band. Bulgaria at 51.6% win probability means Luxembourg win or draw roughly half the time. This was one of those times.
What It Tells Us Going Forward
Luxembourg's counter-attacking threat travels. Even stripped of their key creative midfielders, they found a way to score and, more importantly, to win. That is worth filing away the next time they appear as underdogs in a tight international fixture.
For Bulgaria, this is a reminder that recent defensive solidity does not guarantee a result when the margins are this fine. Conceding under a goal per game in a five-match run is a real trend, but football's variance has a long memory and a short fuse.
The markets we called with genuine conviction all landed. The result market was always the sharpest edge in this one, and sharp edges cut both ways. We own the miss, we stand by the process, and Luxembourg have earned a closer look next time they travel.
