The Call and Where It Fell Apart

We went in confident on this one. Two sides with modest recent form, a neutral venue in the USA, rotation squads, no real prize on the line. A low-scoring draw was the honest read, and a 1-1 was our pinpointed scoreline. The final whistle confirmed 2-2, which is close in spirit but a miss where it mattered most.

The damage came almost entirely in the first half. A. Ares put Eibar ahead at four minutes, G. Guruzeta pulled Athletic level at 25, and then Javier Marton restored Eibar's lead at 33. At the break it was 1-2 to the away side, and that single fact unravelled two of our three losing markets.

Sheila said it plainly and she was wrong. So was Tom. Neither of us seriously entertained Eibar going into the dressing room ahead, and they did it twice in 33 minutes.

What the First Half Did to Our Markets

The half-time result call went down first. We had home or draw at the break, reading a cautious, shape-focused first half where Athletic, at worst, stayed level. Eibar leading 2-1 at 45 minutes was the scenario we explicitly ruled out.

The clean half market followed. We backed Eibar to keep at least one half without conceding, pointing to their three clean sheets in six recent games and Athletic's missing firepower with Nico Williams absent.

The shape was real, but not in the half we chose. Eibar kept Athletic out in the second half, not the first. Y. Berchiche scored in the 91st minute to make it 2-2 on the night, which means it was Athletic who kept the clean second half, not Eibar. We called it the wrong way around.

The exact score miss is the simplest to explain. We called 1-1 and the game finished 2-2. Both scorelines reflect a shared result and a similar goal count, but the extra goal on each side pushed us off.

What We Got Right and What It Tells Us

Six of our nine markets landed. Over 1.5 goals hit comfortably. Both sides to score was correct, which the early Ares goal and Guruzeta's leveller confirmed. First half goal, second half goal, and total goals in the 1-4 range all came in. Athletic scoring was never really in doubt once Iñaki Williams was confirmed in the lineup.

The honest read here is that our overall shape of the game was right. Low intensity, goals shared, neither side dominant. But the first half was sharper than we expected from a pre-season fixture in July, and Eibar's attack moved faster than their defensive reputation suggested it would.

Looking ahead, this game reinforces something worth carrying into the competitive season. Athletic's defence is genuinely open, six games without a clean sheet and Eibar found them twice before the break. Laporte and Nico Williams returning will matter. For Eibar, scoring in a friendly against top-flight opposition with their usual compact 4-3-3 is a decent sign of intent for the division below.
