USA 4-1 Paraguay: We Called the Win, Missed the Margin

Seven from ten. USA won, the half-time lead was there, shots went over, cards piled up, both teams scored. The structural call was right. The scoreline was not, and two other markets went with it.

The Seventh Minute Changed Everything

D. Bobadilla put the ball into his own net in the seventh minute and the match we had mapped out no longer existed. We had called 2-1, built around USA's attacking quality, Paraguay's defensive discipline, and a competitive game that stayed relatively tight into the second half. Instead, an own goal inside seven minutes handed USA an early cushion, Folarin Balogun added a second in the 31st minute assisted by Christian Pulisic, and by half-time it was 3-0. The game was over as a contest before the break.

Balogun added a fourth goal in the 50th minute, Mauricio pulled one back for Paraguay in the 73rd, and Giovanni Reyna put a bow on it in the 98th with an assist from A. Freeman. Final score: 4-1. We had 2-1.

Sheila

2-1 USA. They have the quality and the home advantage to win comfortably, but a clean sheet against Paraguay feels too optimistic. Almiron on the break is a real threat.

Sheila was right about Paraguay threatening on the break, and they did get their goal through Mauricio. But the own goal in the seventh minute made our scoreline call look conservative almost immediately. A 3-0 half-time scoreline was not a world we had modelled.

What the Data Got Right, and What the Chaos Ignored

Strip out Bobadilla's own goal and this is a different conversation. USA were always going to win. The HT lead, total shots over 19.5, first goal to the home side, both teams scoring, total goals over 2.5, total cards over 3.5, the match winner: all landed. That is the framework we built and it held.

The fouls call was the one genuine miss in the numbers. We called under 20.5 and it went over.

This is a close one. The combined average sits just under 20.5 and I don't see enough to push it clearly over. Paraguay foul a lot, sure, but the overall numbers don't really clear the bar.

With Paraguay chasing a three-goal deficit from early in the second half, the foul count climbed as frustration set in. Five yellow cards for Paraguay, including late bookings for D. Gomez, A. Arce, and J. Alonso, told the story of a side that ran out of ideas and started running out of discipline. The data pointed under; the context of a blowout pushed it over. That is a fair miss.

The corners call also missed. We leaned on USA's attacking pressure against a deep block producing corners all night, but a team that scores four goals from open play does not need as many corners. Balogun twice and Reyna once finished moves before they reached the byline. Fewer corners, more goals. We will take the trade-off but the market still went the wrong way.

What Comes Next

For USA, this is a statement. Balogun with two goals, Pulisic and Tillman with assists in the first half, Reyna closing it out in injury time. That attacking depth is real and it is a genuine warning to whoever comes next in the group. Paraguay have five yellow cards, a heavy defeat, and very little margin for error in their remaining fixtures.

For us, the structural read on USA's quality and the match dynamics was sound. One early own goal turned a competitive game into a rout. The scoreline and corners call paid the price. The rest held up.
