What we missed
One Half Too Many: How a Quiet Second 45 Beat Us
We nailed both teams scoring, the range, and the half-time result. Then the second half produced nothing and our best-graded call went down.

Four from five markets landed. The one that hurt was the one we called with the most conviction.
What We Got Right
Gueye put Udinese ahead on 31 minutes, Bieganski levelled for Pogon five minutes later, and that was that for the scoring. Both teams on the scoresheet: correct. Goals landing in the 1-4 range: correct. A first-half goal: correct. Away or draw at the break: correct. The bones of the call were solid.
On the exact score, we went 1-2 and got 1-1. That one stings a little but it was always a low-conviction punt into a tight cluster of probabilities.
Tom
Simulation has 1-1 at 9.7%, 2-1 at 8.7%, 1-2 at 8.2%. Genuinely tight.
We knew that. The 1-1 was the model's own most likely outcome and we talked ourselves into the Udinese edge based on their Barcelona counter. Honest miss, no excuses there.
Where It All Fell Apart
The second-half goal call was the one we graded high confidence. This is where we have to be straight with you.
Sheila
Both defences are porous. A second-half goal is as close to a lock as you get in a friendly.
She was not wrong to read it that way. Udinese had conceded 2.0 goals per game across their last six. Pogon had zero clean sheets in the data we had. Two rotating squads, tired legs, substitutes opening space in the final 30 minutes: every structural reason said the second half would produce something.
It did not. After a busy first half that delivered both goals before the 40-minute mark, the second half was played out in front of us like a training exercise. Neither goalkeeper was truly tested. The final whistle came at 1-1 and our cleanest market walked straight into the bin.
Was this a fluke? Partly. Friendlies in the USA, late September, both squads rotating heavily, nobody chasing the game because a draw suits everyone in pre-season. The incentive structure just evaporated in the second half and there was no chaos to rescue us. No red card, no late corner turned into a scramble, nothing. Sometimes football simply refuses to cooperate and all you can do is log it honestly.
What It Tells Us Going Forward
The clean-half market is worth revisiting as a lesson. We called Udinese to hold one half clean and both sides actually managed it, the second half ended goalless. The defensive structure that beat Barcelona clearly travels.
The bigger takeaway is around second-half confidence grading in neutral-venue pre-season friendlies. When there is no competitive pressure and both teams are cycling through their squad, the usual second-half fatigue logic breaks down. Teams do not push for a winner they do not need. We will be more measured on that market in this context going forward.
Both attacks showed they can score, Gueye and Bieganski both found the net with clean finishes. The underlying reads on these squads hold. We just got mugged by a second 45 minutes that had no interest in helping us out.
